General Knowledge | 6-13 yrs | Interactive

What is bullying?

Bullying is repeated, aggressive behaviour meant to hurt another person. It can be physical, verbal or social. The bully thinks he or she has power over the one being bullied. Bullying is a BIG problem all over the world. You are not alone if you think that you are being bullied.

Bullying Statistics

Over 3.2 million students worldwide are victims of bullying every year. One in three students in the US report being bullied during the school year.

4 Ways to Stop Bullying

1. Feel Good about Yourself

It is not you who is the problem but the bully who has major personal issues. Take a pen and paper and write down all the unique qualities that you have. For example, you might be a very good artist, good at mathematics or an amazing singer. Remember this list the next time the bully tries to trouble you.

2. Avoid the Bully

Often bullies just want a reaction. So don’t give the bully a chance. Avoid the bully as much as possible. That doesn’t mean you hide or skip school. If a bully calls you names, don’t even bother to answer. Keep doing your work or just walk past him or her with your head held high. Imagine his or her insults are being swallowed by fog before they reach you. Giving no reaction at all bores the bully and eventually he or she will lose interest in you.

3. Make Friends

Bullies usually target people who are lonely. Stay with your friends. If you don’t have any, find people who you like and who like you.Try out for a sport, a play or join a club. A bully is less likely to attack you when you are in company of people.

4. Tell Someone

If things are getting out of hand, it is time you tell an adult. It should be someone you trust. It can be your parents, your favourite teacher or the school counsellor. Bullies are afraid of adults because they are anti bullying and most of the time they stop when adults come to know what they’ve been upto.

Bullies believe that they can make their targets feel awful about themselves. Do not get caught in the trap. Try the above steps and see the difference for yourself.
