Birds of Paradise

Today has got to be my luckiest day! I’m camping in New Guinea and look behind me!!!

It‘s a bird of paradise! These birds are members of the family Paradisaeidae. They‘re only found between Eastern Australia to New Guinea. I was wondering why they look so snazzy, and it turns out that abundant food, varied habitats and few predators have allowed these birds to evolve with great diversity. There are just so many types of them! I can’t even decide which one I like best! They each have their own beautiful plumage and the most unique mating calls and dances. Some of them are majestic, while there are some that are downright funny!

Would you believe it if I told you that these birds have evolved from the rather ugly crow and jays! I’m not even kidding! Super Cool right?

By the way, if you’re wondering why I’m dressed like this – I’m hiding out so I can take more beautiful pictures of these magnificent creatures. It’s called camouflaging .

Pretty smart eh?
