Where is Victoria Falls Located?

I’m at “The Smoke That Thunders”. If you’re wondering what I’m talking about, I’m at the Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River. It forms the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and is one of the most spectacular waterfalls I’ve ever been to!

Victoria Falls Original Name

Although the falls are named after the British Queen by the famous explorer David Livingstone, the Kololo Tribe living here around the 1800s gave it a much cooler nickname – The Smoke That Thunders. The name probably came to be because the waterfall transforms the calm Zambezi River into a thunderous curtain of water spray that can be seen from over 31 miles away, and heard from over 25 miles away.

Victoria Falls Facts

The edge of Victoria Falls has a width of over two kilometers and the water gushes off the edge down into a hundred meter ravine! Facing the forest is a mist-soaked rain forest, a path along the edge of which visitors can brave the spray, if they so dare. The reward of braving the spray is an unparalleled view of the Victoria Falls. There are multiple vantage points to view the falls from, such a Knife-edge Bridge, Falls Bridge, Devils Pool and the Lookout Tree. The names are not the only interesting thing about these points. Each of them offers a stellar view of the river turning into what is known as “the greatest curtain of falling water”. That’s right, if you thought the Niagara falls were the largest, you were as wrong as I was!

There’s a lot to do here, whether you seek adventure or relaxation. You can do bungee jumps, kayaking and gorge swings if you’re adventurous. If you want to just relax, you can enjoy elephant rides, fishing, river cruises or even play golf! There’s also a beautiful National park Mosi-oa-Tunya, where you can see a large number of local animals – antelopes, zebras, giraffes etc. An all-round package for good funn is how I would describe this place!
