The classic animated film from Disney of the same name gets a makeover with new songs and photorealistic animation. It is evident from the get-go that a phenomenal amount of time, effort and money has gone into the remake. Animators have made painstaking efforts to ensure each blade of grass, the fur on each animal and each cloud in the sky, amongst others, are as realistic as possible.
And that is one of my issues with the film. But before that, for the tiny handful of people who have not seen the Lion King released in 1994, it is the journey of a young lion cub named Simba, who runs away from his herd at a young age. There are other circumstances around his departure, but those are to be discovered by movie-goers. The original film enchanted its audiences with foot-tapping songs which were fun to sing along with. Though they have kept some original songs, they have also added a few new and wonderful ones.
Coming back around to what hasn’t worked for the film – it would have to be the hyper-realistic animation. For those of you holding on to the nostalgia of the original, the new film feels more like a documentary, rather than an animated film. Some scenes, which elicited high emotion in the original, now fall flat and feel emotionless.
With a star-studded ensemble cast, I expected more emotion, rather than a film which has focussed on its animation and less on storytelling.
