History of Indian Independence and Partition
“Why and how did the Partition of India happen?” Rohan asked Sir Dig-a-Lot.
Sir Dig-a-Lot adjusted his glasses and started, “Before World War II ended, the Labor party came to power in Britain and supported independence for India. The moment this happened, the Muslims asked for a separate state and the Hindus wanted a unified India.
A civil war broke out in India for Partition and many lost their lives. With the chaos increasing, Mountbatten granted independence to India on August 15, 1947. On August 14, Pakistan was created and India was established in the south.”
Rohan asked another question. “What happened after the partition?”
Sir Dig-a-Lot continued, “10 million people left their homes and moved from north to south. They were treated as refugees in their own country. Over 50,000 people died in the civil war. Gandhi was shot on January 30, 1948 for his support towards Muslims. India and Pakistan have fought 3 wars since the partition.
Now that both countries have nuclear power, any war could prove extremely dangerous. The partition left a scar and disturbed many people. It was a difficult time. People like your grandfather were present during the partition. We must think ahead and try to live together peacefully.”
Rohan said, “Yes, we must. I will talk to grandpa tomorrow about this. Thank you for this lesson. I think it is an important one.”
Sir Dig-a-Lot smiled and said, “Indeed it is. Now off to bed Rohan.”
