Silk Dyed Easter Egg

How to make a Silk Dyed Easter Egg

What You Need –

  • A large raw egg
  • An enamel or glass pot
  • Pieces of pure printed silk large enough to cover an egg each
  • Cotton squares large enough to cover eggs wrapped in silk
  • Pieces of wire
  • Scissors
  • Warm water
  • Spoon/tongs
  • Cooling rack
  • Vegetable oil
  • Paper towels

7 Steps to Dye –

  1. Wrap the egg in silk, keeping the printed side towards you. Twist a piece of wire around the silk to secure it.
  2. Place a piece of cotton around the silk wrapped egg and make sure it stays in place by twisting another piece of wire.
  3. Put the egg in a glass or enamel pot. Submerge the egg in water. Add 3 tablespoons of white vinegar to the water.
  4. Bring the water to a boil, lower the heat, and simmer for at least 40 minutes.
  5. Take the egg out with a spoon/tongs. Put it on a cooling rack.
  6. Once the egg has cooled, remove the silk.
  7. If you want your egg to shine, wipe it with a paper towel dipped in vegetable oil.

Arabian Nights Theme

An Arabian nights theme party or even an afternoon

Arabian Nights party theme is a fun and exotic theme for a children’s party. You can pull from cultures all the way from the middle-east to India to play on this theme. Try and stay away from an animated cartoon rendition to make your party have that original feel but definitely include the magic of a genie.

Location

  • Have this indoors and you can give a wonderful tent-like feeling with the décor.
  • Or alternatively take this outdoors and make it a bazar, where different stalls can have different foods or activities.

Invites

  • A card shaped with the design of a carpet.
  • A genie-lamp shaped card

Decor

  • You can find wicker baskets and use mardi gras beads and plastic snakes to place around the location.
  • Middle-eastern style music playing in the background.
  • You can use incense if you know that the children will not be troubled by it.
  • If you choose to do it outside it would mean a lot more work but you can set up a bazaar-like atmosphere with kiosks for different things. Food can be one, refreshments another, and palm reader can be a third.
  • Spray-paint boxes gold and silver to give decorations a rich feel.

Activities

  • Ask one of the mothers coming to the party to dress up as a gypsy woman and have her tell fortunes.
  • You can have a mehendi station.
  • Play coin toss with chocolate coins covered in gold paper where they can keep the coins that they successfully throw into a bucket.
  • Have a story-telling session and read out one or two stories from 101 Arabian Nights.
  • Do a little research on sword fighting and have a small workshop on choreographed sword fighting. Maybe you can get someone who knows a form of martial arts to conduct this.

Grow a Grassapillar

  • Egg Carton
  • Grass Seed
  • Potting Soil
  • Water

Create your very own, indoor friendly, caterpillar with just a few simple household objects. Begin by mixing 3/4 cup of potting soil and 2 tablespoons of grass seed in a bowl. Add water to moisten the mixture, and then set it aside. Once this is done, cut away a three-cup section of an egg carton, and then trim the section along the longer edges so that your grassapillar will look the same from both sides.

With a permanent marker, draw a face on one end. Gently spoon the seed mixture into the cups and wait. Set your creation on a dish in a brightly lit spot and keep the soil moist. The grass should sprout in about a week.

Animal Theme Party

How many times have you noticed a child inching towards a dog but not being able to go the final mile and touch it? They are absolutely mesmerised by creatures that are alive but not human. If you have a zoo in your city, I would say take the entire party for a picnic at the zoo and call it a day. If you aren’t that fortunate to have access to a zoo you could do an Animal Theme party that will have the kids roaring, bleating, and hotting all the way home.

Location

  • So the zoo is not an option. You definitely need a little space in order to do this because you want to let the kids have enough space to act out their animal avatars without bumping into pieces of furniture. To give your venue a rustic feel, throw some hay on the floor. This would be best outside but if you lose the hay, it would be perfect indoors too.

Invites

  • The invites shouldn’t be that hard to do. Make a one sided card in the shape of your kid’s favourite animal and you’re done. Alternatives could be a farmer or a card in the shape of a barn.

Decor

  • Nothing gives your party a country feel than red and white checkered table-cloths. You can name each table after an animal and place a farm-animal in the middle as a centrepiece. You can use these later as party favours as well. To simulate a jungle or the Sahara, think zebra or leopard print, mini potted palms (fake or real), bamboo beaded curtains, and strings of animal-shaped mini lights would be perfect if you’re doing it indoors.

Costumes

  • Encourage everyone to dress up. Don’t specify barnyard or safari because you might end up getting a lot of duplicates. You’ll have a group of kids channeling their inner beast or bird at a parade that you can hold that leads up to cutting the cake.

Food

  • You don’t have to serve any particular type of foo but a great way to bring in the party theme is to have bowls of animal shaped biscuits and crackers lying around for kids to grab. Make a big sign over the food saying ‘Please feed the animals’- Monkeys eat bananas, rabbits eat carrots, squirrels eat nuts…. you see where I’m going with this?

Activities

  • Have a parade. Children love the attention and if you’re in costume, start the parade with yourself so that they don’t feel intimidated about parading in front of a crowd.
  • Have a clay station where kids can make a figure of an animal to take home with them. These can serve well as a take-away as well.
  • An animal themed party really brings out the happy in children. You’ll have to be ready for a little bit of crazy because once they start getting into character it’s hard to break them out of their feral state. But have no fear, little kids are like kittens and will require nap-time before you know it.

Princess Theme

Princess for a day

Every young girl dreams of being a princess and you can make this happen on one special day by organising a Princess theme party. While it’s nice to have animated movies dictate what a princess is, you should try and create a unique experience for your child. Try and steer her away from the animated princesses she may encounter on TV and towards a hybrid of princess and something else. Maybe the princess of the forest, or a princess from an Indian state.

Location

  • This theme is adaptable for any place but is convenient enough to do in your own home.

Invites

  • Invitations that are rolled and tied with ribbon.
  • Invitations with a drawing of a castle.
  • If you’re doing a regional princess, then have a royal looking invitation with art from that region.

Decor

  • Just because the party theme is royal doesn’t mean that you have to spend like one. Use pink, purple, indigo and gold fabrics to drape areas of the location and give it a palatial feel. Mix and match these colours because they don’t all go together.
  • You can cut turrets or the shape of a miniature castle out of cardboard and place them around. This also makes for an excellent backdrop for photographs.

Activities

  • Include in the invitation that everyone should come dressed as if they were attending a court. You may have to call a few mothers to ask them not to put a crown on their respective daughter’s heads to endure that your child is the only princess around.
  • Have a mini fashion show where guests walk down a designated strip either alone or in pairs. You can make up names of fantastical lands and give a running commentary on the fly.
  • Pin the jewel on the princess. Much like the pin the tail on the donkey, you can use a picture of a princess upon which you have to pin a tiara and/or necklace. Alternatively you can play pin the horn on the unicorn.

Beaver – View Beaver and other 3D images for kids from our vast collection of 3D pictures. You just need 3D glasses to view Beaver image. To learn how to make your own 3D glasses read below.

How to make your own 3D glasses:

This part is completely non-tech and requires you to use a little bit of your craftsmanship skills which have probably been lying dormant since your school years. Here is a list of materials required.

Materials required:

  • A sheet of card paper
  • A sheet of red, blue and green gelatin paper each
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Clear tape
  • Gum
  • Basic pattern for glasses as shown in the stencils.

How To Do: (Download how to guide)

I. Print out or draw Stencil 1, 2 and 3 on a paper or directly print on the card paper given in the above downloadable guide. Cut out the sample pattern (including eyeholes) for your 3D glasses and tape the sides to the center section. You now have your stencil for the glasses.

II. Trace the stencil on the card paper. Cut the glasses out making sure to also cut out the eyeholes. Use a double layer of card paper, as a single layer may be too thin. Stick the identical layers of card paper to each other and let them dry. If you want, you can draw it directly on the card paper, but the stencil way is better, as it leaves no margin for error.

III. Tape the red (left) and green or blue (right) gelatin paper pieces to cover the eyeholes. Cut the gelatin paper so that it is a little larger than the opening for the eyes. Make sure that you use a double layer of the gelatin paper for each eye as a single layer may be too light. If you want to create Cyan, you can use one layer of green and one layer of blue gelatin paper.

Colour Scheme

A theme as simple as colour

An easy theme to work with when throwing a children’s party is using a colour theme. Pick two colours that look really great together and go wild.

Location

  • Since this theme is not based in anything specific you can do this practically anywhere.
  • It can also be incorporated into a larger idea. For example you can have it in a playground with all the related decorations in the colour scheme you choose.

Invites

  • This one is simple. Foreshadow the party using the colour scheme of the party.

Decor

  • Helium balloons.
  • A banner saying happy birthday or whatever else the party is celebrating.

Activities

  • Since the theme is so wide, you can choose whatever activities you want that don’t have to fit with any particular theme.
  • If you’re good at art you could invest in some face-paint and paint faces. You could also employ one of your friends, or the friendly neighbourhood face-painter to do so.
  • Play dancing-hlavesies, where children stand on a centerfold of newspaper. You play some music for about 20 seconds and have them fold the newspaper in half. If they step off the newspaper they are eliminated. As the folds become smaller you can move from dancing on newspaper to just standing on it.

Tiny Tots

Learning and partying for your little one

Tiny tots have different learning curves. Some may be just a few months apart and be doing different things. This is a catch-all idea that allows you to invite more than one age-group of pre-schoolers to one event and have them all have a memorable time.

Location

  • You can do this party anywhere depending on your budget. Do this at home if you’re on a smaller budget.
  • If you want to spend a little more then you can do it virtually anywhere. Remember that toddlers need to be monitored at all times and so an enclosed space is ideal.

Invites

  • The invitations should immediately imply the theme and in this case it’s best to have numbers and/or alphabets on the card.
  • If your child is keen on a particular stuffed toy or has a favourite animal, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to feature it.
  • Don’t forget to invite the person who leads your children’s playgroup. Ask them before hand if they’ll be willing to lend a helping hand.

Decor

  • Decorate your house with age-appropriate home-made decorations. These can be numbers made of chart paper from one to ten. Or vowels of the English alphabet.
  • The cake can be shaped as the first letter of the birthday-boy/girl’s name.
  • Helium baloons.

Activities

  • It’s important to lay out all the different activities before the party or immediately upon arrival. This way parents can guide their own children to different stations instead of you having to guide all the little guests around.
  • Cover a large table with plain white paper so the children can scribble on the table itself. Make sure that there are crayons and pencils for all. Have them sign their names on the sheet and you can roll up the paper because it makes for a nice memento.
  • If you’re artistically inclined then you can draw a picture(s) on this sheet before-hand and have children colour between the lines. Try not to stifle their young creativity so leave enough open space that they can let their imagination run wild within these parameters.
  • Also have sheets of paper lying around so that they can make their own masterpieces.
  • Have another station equipped with clay so that children can make their own sculptures. Make sure there’s an adult present at all times so that children don’t end up making a meal of the clay.

Favours

  • What better way to clean up than to give away? Give each child that leaves their own balloon. Maybe some could be a special shape and those are given away to make the child feel like they’re not just taking home the decor.
  • Encourage the parents to keep the clay sculptures.
  • Keep a small paper-bag handy to make it easier for your guests to carry these sculptures or masterpieces they created.

Western Theme Party

Throwing a Western theme party is a great party idea, especially for the boys. Get all the kids to break into their Western gear – cowboy hats, boots, bandana, jeans or a checkered shit. Fire up that barbeque and serve some great grilled food. Keep the crowds happy with chips and salsa sauce. Send your kids on a wild western adventure with this great party activity.

Location

  • You can have this party indoors or even in your backyard. Larger spaces are great too, but then you need to ensure that the kids are watched over by adults.

Invites

  • A card shaped in the design of a cactus
  • A card with a cowboy and cowgirl printed on it

Decor

  • Set the mood as guests arrive by placing cactus and river stones along the walk way.
  • Find old pieces of wood and paint signs on them that say “Saloon” or “Giddyup!”.
  • For the dining area, used chequered table cloth to bring a western feel.
  • To bring a western sunset, find a photo of a sunset and have it enlarged and reproduced onto a giant piece of paper and then hang it in a prominent spot.

Activities

  • Grab your pardner, and get ready to get down. Western parties are perfect for line dancing, square dancing or doing your best Texas Two Steps. For the younger less experienced dancer, show everybody how its done.
  • Arrange for a dart board and have the kids compete against each other over a game of darts.
  • Play a game of quick draw without the guns. Get kids to participate in a drinking game which could include cola or juice. The kid who finishes his glass the fastest is the winner of this game.
  • An old-fashioned game of horseshoes is another great way to get everybody involved. You will need a lawn, two states and some horseshoes for this one. Place the stakes in ground 40feet apart on a flat surface. For kids, you may want to buy rubber horseshoes and shorten the distance.
