Johannes Brahms Life History

Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897) was a leading German composer of the German romantic period who composed for piano, chamber ensembles, symphony orchestra, and for voice and chorus. Brahms began playing music early in his life. Brahms grew up in a humble household and would have to play in dance halls and brothels. From there he went on to give several concerts in Hamburg but did not become prominent until around age nineteen when he went on a concert tour around Europe. Brahms was a nature lover and much of his work reflects the serenity of nature; it is also said that he would take long walks in the woods in order to get inspired for his writing. Of his many works, the most well-known to non-musicians is Wiegenlied or Brahms’ Lullaby.
