Indoor Camping

Indoor Camping

The two horrific words uttered by children that send shudders down the spine of any parent on a weekend are... "I'm bored!" It's too squishy, muddy and mucky to step outside. The park has been rendered useless with all the puddles and you don't want your children playing in the rain.

An indoor tent is an easy and innovative way to incorporate the adventurous world of camping into the comfort of your own home. It keeps your children warm and safe during the monsoon season while still giving them the space to enjoy themselves and use their imagination.

Choose two points at either end of the room of your choice. Tie a rope or a nylon-string tightly between the two points, ensuring it remains taut. You can either use a single or double bed sheet or bed cover for this activity. It is highly recommended that you use an old sheet or cover in case there are any tears or spillages. Hang the sheet over the rope, ensuring an equal amount of length hangs on either side of the rope.

There are one of two ways you can ensure your "tent" maintains its shape. The first is to use two chairs – one on each side of the rope. Drape the sheet over the back of the chair to give volume to your tent. A second option is to use paperweights or cans to weigh down the sheet on either side of the rope in a tent-like shape. The choice is yours, based on whatever you can find easily at home.

You can elevate the camping experience by melting skewered marshmallows on the stove and sandwiching them between two crackers, singing campfire songs and telling ghost stories. You can fill the tent with toys if your children would enjoy that.

The experience of indoor camping is less about how believable your tent is and more about the activity of setting the tent up, eating snacks and enjoying yourselves. These tents are easy to put up and take down and sheets can be thrown in for a wash when the day is done. You can leave your children to create their own stories or use the tent as a starting point to enact an interesting story or situation. You can change the size of your tent based on the size of the sheet you use and the amount of volume you give the tent.
