Indian Folk Tales: Mooku Podi

Indian Folk Tales | 3-12 yrs | Reading Pod

Once upon a time, there lived a man who owned a large coconut garden. There were many coconut trees in his garden that bore large fruits. One day, two thieves named Kittu and Ramu planned to rob some coconuts from the man’s garden. But his man overheard their plan and decided to teach them a lesson. So, as soon as it was night, he climbed up a tall coconut tree. He also carried a knife, some salt and some chilli powder with him. He sat at the top of the tree and waited for the thieves to come.

Kittu and Ramu entered the coconut garden quietly after midnight. When they reached below the tree on which the owner was hiding, Kittu said to Ramu, “You climb up the tree and throw down the coconuts to me. I will stay here and keep a watch.” So, Ramu quickly climbed up the tree. But the owner of the garden was already waiting for him. As soon as he reached near the top, the man cut off Ramu’s nose with his knife and sprinkled salt and chilli powder on it. Ramu screamed in pain and started shouting, “Mooku Poi, Mooku Poi,” which means ‘I lost my nose’ in the language of that village. Ramu climbed down the tree and ran off shouting, “Mooku Poi, Mooku Poi.”

Kittu, who was waiting near the tree, was surprised to see this. He could not understand what had happened. So, he started climbing up the tree himself. But as soon as he reached near the top, the owner of the tree cut off his nose too, and sprinkled salt and chilli powder on it. Kittu also shouted in pain, “Mooku Poi, Mooku Poi.”

In this way, the owner of the trees saved his coconuts from the thieves. The two thieves spent the next day telling everyone in the village, “Mooku Poi, Mooku Poi.”
