Who is George Frideric Handel?

George Frideric Handel (1685 1959) was a German-born British composer who was most noted for his operas, anthems and concertos. Handel’s father was greatly opposed to him becoming a musician but was convinced to let his son study music and composition when the child went on a trip to perform for a wealthy duke. During a trip to Florence Handel’s love for the Italian opera tradition grew and in his lifetime he would go on to compose 42 operas in a span of 30 years. When Handel’s patron, George, the elector of Hannover moved to London to become King he followed his patron there, where he would produce the majority of his work. Apart from this operatic tradition, Handel’s most famous piece is the Messiah which includes the famous Halleluiah.
